Who We Are
Meet the Man Behind the Mustard

In the process of getting on an app that will show my locations on a daily basis…what do you think of my introductory story?
Meet the Man Behind the Mustard: TJ of TJ’s Dawg House
At first glance, TJ’s Dawg House might look like any other food truck tucked into a Lowe’s parking lot, but step a little closer and you’ll find something more: a loyal community, a
deep-rooted passion for hot dogs, and a man with a story.
TJ’s journey didn’t start in Texas. It began in the little state of Vermont back in 2007, where he
ran his first food venture. But in 2016, life brought him south to the Lone Star State—he jokes
that the story requires a bottle of scotch to tell—but what we do know is that Texas gained a local legend the day he rolled in and opened the window to his now-famous hot dog truck.
“I was thinking, ‘What else can I do?’” TJ says when asked why he chose Chicago-style hot dogs.
“Then I found out Gourmet Magazine called the Chicago Dog the best-tasting hot dog in the United States. So I said, duh, you gotta go with the best.”

But TJ’s Dawg House is about more than just the perfect blend of relish, onion, pickle, tomato, and poppy seed bun with a sprinkle of celery salt. It’s about heart. It’s about community. “Everybody that comes to this window gets my family and friend's discount,” he says with a grin. “I’ve watched kids grow up here—kids who came at Five years old are now driving themselves to the truck. They tell me, ‘I used to come here with my dad.
’ That hits you, you know?”

Running a food truck hasn’t been easy.
“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,
” TJ admits. “It’s taught me how fine the line is between work and life, and how important it is not to cross it. So if
I don’t show up tomorrow, it’s probably kiddo Sunday. Don’t get mad at me.”
The Dawg House is a one-man show, and TJ is unapologetically himself through it all. He takes
pride in being the face behind the counter.
“It’s not my neighbor’s kid back here—it’s me. That way, when I mess up every once in a while, you forgive me.”
With a 4.9 rating on Google and Five stars on Yelp, there’s no denying something special is happening in that tiny truck. Part of it is the food, of course. But the other part—the bigger
part—is TJ. His warmth, his jokes (including his strict anti-ketchup-on-hot-dogs policy unless you're under 17), and his authenticity turn first-time visitors into regulars and regulars into family.
“This lifestyle isn’t easy, ” he says, referencing Texas heat and long hours.
“That’s why the window is so small. But I’m here every day—except Tuesday and every other Sunday—from 11 to 2:30. If you can’t make it then, hire me. I’ll come feed your family.”
So if you ever find yourself craving a hot dog with a side of heart, head to TJ’s Dawg House.

Come for the food—but don’t be surprised if you leave feeling like part of the family.— at T.J.'s Dawg House.
